ALECSO participates in  Expert Group Meeting on   “Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction into Educational Curricula”

 

The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) took part in an Expert Group Meeting on Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction into Educational Curricula in the Arab World. The meeting was held at the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo on August 11–12, 2025, under the patronage of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States.

ALECSO was represented by Dr. Mohammed Kamal, Director of the Institute of Arab Research and Studies. 

The meeting addressed several issues, including regional cooperation and activities related to disaster risk reduction (DRR), studies on integrating DRR into educational curricula, building the next generation of DRR experts, and the Arab framework for promoting education as a central component in building more disaster-resilient societies.

The meeting included working groups that discussed:

  • Developing a draft action plan for integrating DRR into formal and non-formal education,
  • Developing the conceptual framework and scientific content for DRR in education through educational and interactive materials,
  • Training teachers to implement risk-sensitive curricula,
  • Establishing an Arab network of experts in education and DRR,
  • Enhancing the role of Arab media in terms of awareness-raising  and disaster response,
  • Developing a monitoring and evaluation mechanism to measure educational impact.

The meeting was attended by experts from several Arab countries (Egypt, Oman, Iraq, UAE, Jordan), along with experts from UNESCO’s Regional Office.
