Syrian Education Minister receives ALECSO Delegation

As part of its mission to promote joint Arab action in the fields of education, culture, and science, and in implementation its initiative to support the educational process in Syria, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) took part, on May 27, 2025, in a high-level official meeting convened by the Syrian Ministry of Education.

The meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Mohammed Turko, Minister of Education, and included the participation of the Syrian National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, as well as representatives of the German organization “Human Restart.”

The ALECSO delegation was led by Dr. Rami Iskander, Director of Education, who conveyed the greetings of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, ALECSO’s Director-General, and his deep appreciation to the Minister and to all those present. Dr. Iskander affirmed ALECSO’s solidarity with Syria during this critical period, and its full readiness—alongside international partners—to provide educational, technical, and psychological support, train educational staff, and review and develop curricula in a way that would strengthen the educational system.

For his part, the Minister emphasized the importance of the visit, which comes to reaffirm Syria’s return to its Arab educational and cultural sphere. He commended ALECSO’s initiative as a sincere embodiment of Arab solidarity and a practical call to unify efforts for the advancement of education, which is key to rebuilding the individual and society.

The Minister seized this opportunity to extend an official invitation to ALECSO’s Director-General to visit Syria. He indicated that the Ministry has prepared an emergency response plan that involves rehabilitating a large number of damaged schools, reintegrating displaced children into the educational system, and providing the necessary educational and psychological support to ensure their proper integration. He reviewed the broad lines of the national strategic plan, which focuses on curriculum development in line with international standards, educational empowerment, emergency teacher training, vocational and academic qualification, alignment of vocational education with labor market needs, and openness to international expertise. He further emphasized the importance of national competitions in encouraging educational excellence and enhancing teachers' skills.

The visit was designed to strengthen cooperation between ALECSO and the Syrian Ministry of Education in the fields of education, culture, and science, proceeding from a firm belief that education is key to achieving sustainable development and civilizational advancement.
