Under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, the Department of Science and Scientific Research organized the “Arab-Global Academic Cooperation Meeting on Green Jobs” on May 13, 2025 at ALECSO headquarters in Tunis.
The meeting aimed to support the advancement of green jobs in the tourism sector, promote the concept of ecotourism and sustainable tourism, given their direct impact on the environment, and enhance Arab capacities in areas that support green economy. It also sought to foster networking among Arab and international academic institutions and ensure the transfer and sharing of experience and expertise in this regard.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to the Republic of Tunisia, ambassadors of participating Arab countries, and a delegation from Malta’s Institute of Tourism Studies, headed by the Institute’s Executive Director.
Participants included representatives from universities and institutes in several Arab countries, namely Jordan, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Libya, Egypt, and Mauritania.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, noted that this event was held as part of implementing the MoU signed between ALECSO and Malta’s Institute of Tourism Studies. ALECSO, he added, would act as a liaison between the Institute and Arab institutions concerned with green jobs. He stressed the importance of companies supporting the development of green tourism skills and competencies, through investments in workforce training, workshops, and relevant local programs; thereby enhancing employability and continuous skill acquisition and development.
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Sanad Abu Darwish, Director of Science and Scientific Research, stressed that this meeting aligns with ALECSO’s commitment to advancing scientific research, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, and opening up new prospects for Arab youth. It is also part of implementing the Arab Strategy for Scientific Research, Technology and Innovation—whose follow-up was entrusted to ALECSO by the 28th Arab Summit—to help achieve comprehensive and sustainable development and contribute to building a fair green economy.
The Meeting featured scientific sessions on green jobs, and concluded with a set of recommendations that will find their way to implementation.
