The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) participated in the first edition of the International Scientific Day of the University of Tunis, held on October 21, 2026.
ALECSO was represented by Dr. Mohamed Jemni, Director of ICT, who delivered a presentation entitled “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Education: ALECSO’s Experience and Prospects for the Responsible University.” The presentation explored the rapid transformations taking place in higher education amid major advances in AI technologies. Particular attention was given to the transition from generative AI to agentic AI and the new opportunities this transition offers for developing learning, teaching, scientific research, and university governance.
Dr. Jemni highlighted key aspects of ALECSO’s experience and initiatives in artificial intelligence, education, and digital transformation. He particularly emphasized the Organization’s efforts to promote the responsible and ethical use of AI, build capacities, foster innovation and inclusion, and advance its work in AI ethics.
The presentation also addressed several challenges associated with the use of AI in universities, including the accuracy of content generated by intelligent systems, bias, data protection and privacy, copyright, and academic integrity. It stressed the need to move beyond simply using AI tools towards establishing a comprehensive university governance framework that ensures these technologies are deployed safely, responsibly, and in a human-centered manner.
Dr. Jemni emphasized that, in the age of artificial intelligence, universities must rethink their roles, curricula, and approaches to teaching, assessment, and scientific research. He highlighted the importance of developing the capacities of faculty members and students, while preserving the essential role of human beings in critical thinking, creativity, decision-making, and the exercise of responsibility.
The presentation concluded by underscoring the need to move “from the smart university to the wise university”—that is, from a university that uses technology efficiently to one that employs AI with awareness and responsibility. This approach seeks to ensure that AI enhances rather than replaces human intelligence, safeguards academic and human values, and places knowledge and innovation at the service of society and sustainable development.
ALECSO’s participation in this scientific event forms part of its ongoing efforts to support responsible digital transformation in Arab higher education institutions and strengthen dialogue and cooperation between universities and regional and international institutions on the future of education and scientific research in the age of artificial intelligence.
