Governor of Damascus receives ALECSO Director-General

 

The Governor of Damascus, Mr. Maher Edlbi, received, on January 15, 2026 at the seat of the Governorate, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO.

The Governor welcomed the Director-General and his accompanying delegation, wishing them a pleasant stay in Syria. He highlighted the glorious civilizational status of the city of Damascus since the earliest times, and its rich heritage landmarks, a number of which are currently undergoing restoration in order to preserve their civilizational value.

The Governor of Damascus also presented the main activities and efforts undertaken to enhance the  status of the city as a cultural and tourist destination. He commended ALECSO’s role in safeguarding tangible and intangible heritage and its continued efforts to inscribe heritage elements on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. In this context, he expressed the Governorate’s desire to strengthen cooperation with the Organization by engaging in its cultural activities, events, and festivals, and benefiting from its expertise in the preservation and restoration of archaeological landmarks.

For his part, the Director-General expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Governor of Damascus for the warm welcome and generous hospitality, and for providing the opportunity to learn about the Governorate’s activities and programs. He affirmed ALECSO’s readiness to positively engage with the proposals discussed during the meeting, and commended the programs and projects being prepared to ensure that the city of Damascus continues to fulfill its historic civilizational role.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Director-General presented the Governor of Damascus with the ALECSO Shield.
