ALECSO organizes First Forum on Citizenship Education in Libya

 

As part of implementing ALECSO’s program on Citizenship Education, the First Sub-Regional Forum on Citizenship Education kicked off on December 28, 2025, at the headquarters of the Libyan National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

The Forum was organized by ALECSO (Education Department) in collaboration with the Libyan National Commission, within the framework of supporting Arab efforts to promote active citizenship and instill shared human values among children and youth.

The Forum opened with a speech by Mr. Wissam Abdelkabeer Al-Taher, Secretary-General of the Libyan National Commission, in which he expressed his thanks and appreciation to ALECSO for its contributions to the development of Arab societies.

Dr. Rami Iskander, Director of Education at ALECSO, also delivered a speech in which he conveyed the greetings of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO. He emphasized that the organization of this Forum is part of ALECSO’s strategic vision to make citizenship education a fundamental pillar in reforming educational systems in Arab countries, and an effective tool for addressing current challenges. He commended Libya’s hosting of the Forum, as well as its strong commitment to supporting educational programs that promote the values of coexistence, peace, and belonging.

Opening speeches emphasized the critical importance of citizenship education in strengthening national identity, spreading a culture of tolerance and acceptance of others, and building enlightened generations capable of critical thinking and positive participation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Forum saw the participation of specialists from the Maghreb countries, alongside Libyan experts representing several relevant national institutions.

The Forum discussed a number of scientific and educational themes, most notably the integration of citizenship values into educational curricula, the promotion of critical thinking, the development of community participation skills, and the role of curricular and extracurricular activities in building responsible citizens, in line with the vision for educational development in the Arab world.
