ALECSO Selects Katara as “Arab Opera City”

The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) has designated the Katara Cultural Village Foundation as “Arab Opera City.” The announcement was made during a ceremony held on 26 November 2025, at ALECSO headquarters, in the presence of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO; H.E. Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti, Director-General of the Katara Foundation; H.E. Mr. Zayed bin Saeed Al-Kumait Al- Khayarin, Qatar’s Ambassador to Tunisia; along with members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Tunisia.

This honor has been bestowed upon the Katara Cultural Village Foundation in recognition of its outstanding role in supporting Arab opera music and enhancing its presence on the regional and international stage.

In his remarks on this occasion, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, noted that the selection of Katara for the title of “Arab Opera City” reflects its status as an influential Arab cultural beacon, and serves to strengthen future cooperation in musical and cultural projects. He affirmed, in this regard, ALECSO’s readiness to expand partnership with all Arab countries in a way that helps showcase Arab cultural diversity, foster creativity, and support leading culture and arts institutions.

It is worth recalling that ALECSO previously designated Katara as the “City of Arabic Novel” and the “City of Cultural Heritage of Arabian Horses,” in recognition of its leading initiatives in promoting Arab culture.
