The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) has released the official English version of the ALECSO Charter on Artificial Intelligence Ethics, following its adoption earlier this year.
The Charter serves as a comprehensive ethical and regulatory framework for the responsible use of AI technologies in the educational, cultural, and scientific fields in the Arab world. It reflects ALECSO’s commitment to promoting human values, preserving cultural identity, and ensuring AI technologies contribute to sustainable development, while respecting privacy, human rights, and cultural diversity.
Originally drafted in Arabic with input from experts from nearly all ALECSO Member States, the Charter has been translated into English by the Damascus-based Arab Center for Arabization, Translation, Authorship and Publication. This makes ALECSO’s vision and ethical principles regarding AI accessible to a broader international audience, including policymakers, researchers, and technology stakeholders.
The Charter outlines core principles such as the preservation of human dignity, justice, inclusiveness, environmental sustainability, cultural heritage protection, transparency, accountability, and technological sovereignty. It also provides detailed guidance for the use of AI in education, culture, and scientific research, with emphasis on stronger inter-Arab collaboration and alignment with international standards.
