ALECSO participates in Second Meeting of the Partners of the Arab League’s "Education for Return" Initiative

H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, took part in the second meeting of the partners of the Arab League’s “Education for Return” initiative, held remotely on August 2, 2021.

The meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Haifa Abu-Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector at the League of Arab States, and attended by representatives from various regional and international organizations.

The meeting was devoted to addressing the mechanisms for implementing the initiative designed to alleviate the problem of education disruption by helping children and youth who left school in their home countries because of conflicts or other exceptional situations to continue learning.

In his statement to the meeting, the Director-General thanked the General-Secretariat for convening this meeting in these exceptional times. He highlighted the aspects that constitute a common ground for action for all partners involved in this initiative. He strongly emphasized that in the face of these difficult circumstances, exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis which has further complicated the situation of displaced and refugee children and youth, it is the duty of all regional and international organizations, governments and civil society to join efforts so that these children and youth are not left alone to face their fate.

The Director-General also indicated that ALECSO is cooperating with its partners to support displaced and refugee children and youth and alleviate their suffering, noting that ALECSO is currently working on the draft “Arab Plan for Education in Times of Crisis and Emergency”, in collaboration with its Member States and in coordination with the Arab League General-Secretariat.
